The comfort zone is a place I know very well. It is that cozy, familiar space where everything feels safe and predictable. As I have gotten to know myself better, I now understand why it was always so hard for me to step out of this comfort zone. This is the space where I feel in control, where risks are minimal and where challenges are few. Especially with ADD (ADHD without the hyper), it is very important for me to build in this feeling of control, and where better to do that than in the safe space of the so-called comfort zone. You would assume that having a sense of security and feeling safe is good, right? But keeping control and staying in the safe zone also holds me back from experiencing the full spectrum of life’s opportunities. Stepping out of it can be intimidating, yet it is essential for personal growth and achieving dreams.

"The comfort zone is a psychological state in which things feel familiar to a person and they are at ease and in (perceived) control of their environment, experiencing low levels of anxiety and stress. In this zone, a steady level of performance is possible." — Judith Bardwick (Author of Danger in the Comfort Zone)

Comfort zone vs Growth Zone

I like to have routines in life. They keep things clear, simple and familiar. However, this also brings a unsettling feeling of stagnation. Life can become a little boring and predictable. Being fully aware of staying in my comfort zone, I sometimes gathered all my courage to step out of it. The steps I took then may seem like small to the outside world, but for me, they were huge.

"Your comfort zone is not a place that you rest and recover, but a place that you expand. You don't leave it; you make it bigger." — Dr. Elizabeth Lombardo (Clinical Psychologist and Author of Better Than Perfect)

To give you an example: public speaking is something I truly admire but also feared tremendously. Perhaps subconsciously, at one point in life I decided to become a teacher. In that role, speaking in front of groups became inevitable, it is obviously a crucial part of the job so there was no escape! The first time I stood in front of a class, my heart raced, my hands trembled and I felt like I was about to faint. Inside I was panicking and wanted to vanish on the spot, but I decided to stay and pushed myself through. Each time it got a little easier and soon, I found myself not just surviving but thriving in situations I once dreaded. The more you do it, the more experience you gain and the more comfortable it becomes.

“Comfort is the enemy of achievement.” - Farrah Gray
